Our whole process for Tess has been about reencountering Thomas Hardy with our female gaze, so we asked writer Jacquie Wyatt to compose us a poem in response to his work.
Jacquie lives in deepest darkest Kent and writes poetry, flash fiction and novels. Her poems have been published in The Dawntreader, the Poems for a Liminal Age anthology (SPM Publications, 2015), Rollick, Structo, Chain Reaction and Gold Dust. She is a repeat winner of Write Invite for flash fiction and Hour of Writes for fiction and poetry.

This brazen retelling of Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles sees an all-female cast of three welcome the audience into our semi-immersive pub setting to gather and hear the tragic tale of Tess. With a live folk band, shocking new plot twists, and a healthy jolt of feminism, our Tess is fighting to tell her truth – and in this modern day and age, we thought it was about time to have it heard.
