Fringe First and Total Theatre Award-winning Breach (Tank, The Beanfield) restage the 1612 trial of Agostino Tassi for the rape of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Based on surviving court transcripts, Breach dramatise the seven-month trial that gripped Renaissance Rome, and asks how much has changed in the last four centuries. Blending myth, history and contemporary commentary, this is the story of how a woman took revenge through her art to become one of the most successful painters of her generation. We at Ondervinden love a good fresh encounter with history - especially when it’s got some tasty undercurrents of modern feminism! We’re also big fans of Breach in general - they are very much a company to watch, and this certainly sounds like a show to get excited about.

Our first experience of Alison Thea Skot in London at the Vaults Festival was one of the funniest displays of improv we’ve ever seen. We caught this show at the Soho Theatre a few months ago, and her character comedy is second to none too - don’t miss her!

Cleopatra's death by asp is a common myth, largely scientifically disproven. Set in a broadcast recording center, Anguis is an imagined conversation between the great pharaoh Cleopatra and a contemporary immunologist. Join us in the studio as we unpack Cleopatra's story, exploring alternatives to the fetishised popular truth. A story exploring our responsibility to seek the truth in a post-truth era. This debut piece from Olivier Award winner Sheila Atim will feature original music. Commissioned by Avalon and BBC Arts.
Another classic figure of history (Cleopatra) given a fresh encounter by a brilliant theatre maker.
We first saw Sheila Atim long back at the Coronet Theatre in Notting Hill, as the exceptional Babette in ‘Babette’s Feast’. Her performance was stunning - and we can’t wait to see this new piece - written and performed by the Olivier Award winner herself.

This brazen retelling of Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles sees an all-female cast of three welcome the audience into our semi-immersive pub setting to gather and hear the tragic tale of Tess. With a live folk band, shocking new plot twists, and a healthy jolt of feminism, our Tess is fighting to tell her truth – and in this modern day and age, we thought it was about time to have it heard.
